Is Your Concrete Hot, Slippery, or Ugly? Here’s How to Fix It

If your concrete surfaces are too hot to walk on, slick when wet, or just plain hard on the eyes, you’re not alone. These are some of the most common complaints homeowners and property managers have about pool decks, patios, and walkways. The good news? You don’t have to live with it, and you don’t even have to rip everything out and start over. There are practical, cost-effective solutions that can completely transform your concrete.

1. Make hot concrete more bearable

Concrete surfaces that feel like they’re frying your feet in the summer are a common problem. Several factors can affect how hot your concrete gets:

  • Material: Some coatings absorb less heat than traditional gray concrete.
  • Color: Darker colors soak up more heat, while lighter colors reflect it.
  • Sun exposure: Full sun will make for a hotter surface.
  • Texture: Smooth surfaces tend to feel hotter than textured ones.

One of the best ways to cool things down is with a textured acrylic coating, sometimes called cool deck. These coatings are designed to reflect more heat and stay cooler underfoot than bare concrete. The added texture also reduces how much of your foot actually touches the surface, which helps it feel cooler.

If you already have an existing slab, resurfacing is usually the easiest fix. Instead of tearing out your concrete, a contractor can apply a cool deck overlay such as SUNDEK’s Classic Texture right on top. Not only does this improve comfort, but it also gives you a chance to completely update the look with new colors, patterns, or finishes.

2. Make slippery surfaces safer

Slippery concrete—especially around pools—isn’t just annoying, it’s a safety hazard. Here are a few ways to add traction:

  • Add grit to the surface. Materials such as aluminum oxide, silica sand, or glass beads can be mixed into a sealer or broadcast on top of a surface to create a slip-resistant finish. Aluminum oxide is a popular option because it’s durable, effective, and doesn’t drastically change the look.
  • Use textured finishes. Instead of relying on additives alone, consider a naturally textured surface. Spray textures or knockdown finishes such as Classic Texture provide built-in grip without looking overly rough.
  • Choose the right sealer. Some sealers create a glossy finish that can be slick when wet, so anti-slip additives are a must. Penetrating sealers or those designed specifically for traction can help maintain safety without sacrificing appearance.
  • Try textured overlays. Coatings that mimic textured materials such as limestone offer a naturally slip-resistant surface while still delivering a high-end look.

If your current surface is already slippery, resurfacing it with a slip-resistant coating is a great option. A new overlay can be customized with the right texture and sealer combination to give you a safer, more comfortable space.

3. Give ugly concrete a makeover

If your concrete is plain, cracked, faded, or has any other visible issues, you don’t have to tear everything out and start from scratch. Depending on what you’re working with, there are several options.

For cracked or damaged concrete:
Resurfacing is often the best solution. If your slab is still structurally sound, a contractor such as SUNDEK can apply a coating right on top of it, covering imperfections and making it look brand new. This saves you from the cost, mess, and time of a full replacement.

For faded or outdated surfaces:
Color can make a huge difference. Stains, dyes, or coatings can completely transform the look of your concrete—whether you want something modern, rustic, or designed to mimic materials like stone or brick.

For surfaces that just need a refresh:
Sometimes a deep clean and reseal is all it takes. Sealers don’t just protect your concrete—they can enhance color, add richness, and improve the overall finish.

Resurfacing really shines here because it checks all the boxes: it repairs, refreshes, and redesigns your space in one step. Plus, you can customize everything from color and texture to patterns and borders.

Why resurfacing is often the best move

  • Fix multiple issues at once (heat, safety, and appearance)
  • Avoid demolition and replacement costs
  • Customize the look to match your style
  • Extend the life of your existing concrete
