Old Pool Transformed into a Colorful Community Splash Pad

When the City of Lewisville decided to rethink its aging Olympic-sized pool, the goal was to create something that would bring people together while minimizing maintenance and safety concerns. The pool had become an underused amenity that required a large staff of lifeguards and constant upkeep—an expensive challenge for the city. Looking for a better use of the space, city leaders embraced the idea of converting the pool into a splash pad, a safer and more community-oriented feature.
At the Lewisville Old Town Aquatic Center, the city of Lewisville worked with Krafsman Commercial Playgrounds & Water Parks and Sundek Commercial Contracting to transform what was an old Olympic-sized pool into a safe, vibrant, low-maintenance space for families to gather and cool off. To bring that vision to life, Lewisville worked with Kraftsman Commercial Playgrounds & Water Parks for the design, who then turned to SUNDEK to make the surface both beautiful and functional. The Sundek Commercial Contracting team was tasked with resurfacing more than 12,000 square feet of concrete with a vibrant, multi-color hand-taped design that would bring energy and visual appeal to the new splash pad.

Classic Texture is SUNDEK’s original spray texture overlay system, known for combining visual appeal with functionality. Widely used by architects, commercial property owners, and homeowners alike, Classic Texture provides a slip-resistant surface that’s safe even when wet. Its non-porous acrylic finish repels dirt, oils, and chemicals, helping the surface stay clean with minimal maintenance. The system’s subtle texture keeps it comfortable underfoot. It stays cooler than concrete, brick, or tile on hot days, and its multi-step application process allows for creative design effects while maintaining a strong chemical bond with the concrete underneath.
For the splash pad, Sundek Commercial Contracting and ATD used the design plans to create gorgeous custom colors that complement the splash pad features, creating a space that’s not only fun and safe, but also beautiful to look at.As with many outdoor projects, weather presented one of the biggest challenges. The installation took place during the wet season, and frequent rainstorms caused multiple delays. Despite the setbacks, Sundek Commercial Contracting crews worked diligently to help the project stay as close to schedule as possible, coordinating with Kraftsman to make progress whenever the weather allowed.
Another challenge came from the site itself. While the concrete used to fill in the old pool was brand new, the surrounding deck area was original. Some spots on the older concrete needed repair, which meant Sundek Commercial Contracting needed to be strategic about making it look uniform. Achieving that was no small task. Crews repaired damaged sections, tested multiple color combinations, and carefully applied color until the transition between old and new was nearly undetectable. To further ensure a cohesive look, the team incorporated new joints into the design so that any lines between the two concrete areas would look intentional rather than patched together.
Despite working with old and new concrete (old concrete was previously the deck that surrounded the pool while new concrete was poured to fill the pool), Sundek Commercial Contracting created a cohesive surface that is comfortable and safe to walk on.The finished splash pad is now a bright, welcoming space that captures the spirit of Lewisville’s community. What was once a costly, underused swimming pool has been reborn as a safe and accessible amenity where families can spend time together. Parents can relax nearby while kids play in the water features, all within a space that’s both beautiful and built to last. Thanks to the collaboration between the City of Lewisville, Kraftsman Commercial Playgrounds & Water Parks, and Sundek Commercial Contracting, the Lewisville Old Town Aquatic Center now has a stunning splash pad that will keep residents cool—and connected—for years to come.
