Which SUNDEK Coating is Best for Pool Deck Resurfacing?

When selecting “the best” pool deck coating, there’s not a one-size-fits-all answer. The right coating for pool deck resurfacing depends on the needs of the pool area you’re resurfacing. Here, we share the solutions we offer so you can determine which coating is best for your needs.

Best All-Around: Classic Texture

SUNDEK of San Antonio crews used Classic Texture to create a multicolored sunburst design for this pool deck at the Aloft Hotel in San Antonio, TX. See more of this project.

Our most popular pool deck coating, Classic Texture, often referred to as “knockdown texture,” offers a reliable, attractive solution for both residential and commercial spaces. Key benefits include:

  • Safety. Textured finish creates a slip-resistant surface that provides peace of mind around pool decks or at waterparks.
  • Easy maintenance. Non-porous acrylic finish makes it so that the surface resists stains from dirt, oils, and chemicals.
  • Comfort. Stays much cooler than concrete, brick, or tile, making it more comfortable in hot weather.
  • Durable. Classic Texture is a highly durable coating system that you can rely on for long-lasting performance and resilience.
  • Design flexibility. Customizable textures and finishes allow for a variety of styles.

Budget Friendly: SunSplash

At the Lexington Griffin Gate Marriott, SUNDEK’s Commercial Contracting team used SunSplash on an indoor pool, an outdoor pool (shown), and balconies to provide durable, safe surfaces that will last for years to come.

Similar to Classic Texture, SunSplash is a spray-on acrylic finish that is applied without the knockdown troweling step. Good for both commercial and residential surfaces. Key benefits include:

  • Safety. Designed to create a secure, slip-resistant surface.
  • Long-lasting performance. Built to handle the foot traffic of residential or community pools.
  • Enhanced visual appeal. Customizable decorative effects including aggregate, scorelines, and masonry finishes.
  • Design flexibility. Wide range of color options to complement surrounding spaces.
  • Easy maintenance. Acrylic finish that simplifies cleaning and upkeep.
  • Cost savings. One of the most economical decorative concrete coating options available.

Aesthetics: SunStamp or Tuscan

SUNDEK of Houston used the Tuscan coating to transform a plain gray patio and pool deck into a beautiful retreat for homeowners. See more of this project.

If you’re interested in a pool deck that looks more like natural materials than a textured coating and the look of your deck is at the top of your priority list, either SunStamp or Tuscan may be the right choice. With both these options, you can mimic the look of flagstone, slate, brick, or wood.

What’s the difference between SunStamp and Tuscan?

SunStamp is a stamped overlay system. It uses physical stamps and templates pressed into the surface to create defined patterns (like stone, brick, or tile). This typically requires a thicker application to achieve those deeper impressions.

Choose SunStamp for structured, repeatable patterns with a traditional stamped concrete look.

Tuscan is a hand-troweled texture. Instead of stamping, the look is crafted manually by the installer, giving it a more artistic, freeform, Old-World finish. Because of this method, it can achieve a similar high-end look with a thinner application.

Choose Tuscan for a more custom, handcrafted appearance with added flexibility and typically lower material buildup (and often lower cost).

Extra Grip: SunSand

For sloped areas or very splash-prone zones, SunSand is an ideal solution. This system incorporates fine aggregates (like glass beads or aluminum oxide) into the finish coat to provide maximum traction. Though it still looks great, this system is less about “looks” and more about preventing slips in high-risk areas. Key benefits:

  • Enhanced safety. Creates a fine-textured, slip-resistant surface ideal for high-traffic or wet areas.
  • Improved traction. The addition of materials such as glass beads or aluminum oxide creates extra grip for bare feet.
  • Greater versatility. Combine SunSand with any other SUNDEK decorative finish to create the look you want.
  • Long-lasting durability. Embedded materials that help maintain surface integrity over time.

Comparison Table

System Primary Benefit Heat Level* Look/Style
Classic Texture Heat & Slip Resistance Lowest Subtle, textured “knockdown”
SunSplash Economical & Durable Low Uniform “orange peel”
SunStamp Realistic Texture Moderate Stone, Wood, or Brick
Tuscan High-End Artistry Moderate Hand-carved stone/slate
SunSand Maximum Traction Low/Moderate Fine, sandy texture

*Color selection also makes a big difference in heat retention. Lighter colors retain less heat while darker colors retain more.
