Women remain significantly underrepresented in the construction industry, making up only 10-11% of the workforce (source: Bureau of Labor Statistics). However, at SUNDEK, all of our director positions are filled by women. For Women’s History Month, we are celebrating the amazing women in director positions at our company.
“When you step back and look at our company as a whole, we have been empowered by an amazing executive leadership team that is all men,” says Deidre Dann, Director of Commercial Contracting and Sales. “I don't think that they specifically sought after women for these director level positions, but they looked at all their staff, and they picked the right people for the job, and that is really touching.”
For many of the women at SUNDEK, a career in decorative concrete wasn’t something that they necessarily sought out, but rather something they discovered and came to love. “I was amazed at the products and how a plain concrete surface could be transformed,” says Amanda Fuller, Director of Manufacturing. “In addition to the products, I enjoyed the people I worked with both inside and outside the office.”
Sam Enriquez, Controller for the accounting department, stumbled upon SUNDEK when she was looking for a new job after relocating to Texas. “What’s kept me here, compared to other industries I’ve worked for, is the people.” Sam says.
The women at SUNDEK are making a powerful impact, proving that talent, leadership, and expertise know no gender. From project management to operations and customer relations, they play a crucial role in shaping our success and setting new standards in the industry. “I believe that women bring emotional intelligence, efficiency, and are detail-oriented,” says Lily Herrera-Arias, Director of Operations. “We are, for the most part, managers in a lot of different ways, personally and in our careers.”
At SUNDEK, we recognize that when people of different perspectives come together, decision-making becomes more multidimensional, leading to well-rounded solutions and greater innovations. “Different customers respond to men and women in unique ways, and having diverse representation strengthens both relationships and business success,” says Lori Snider, Director of Marketing and Contractor Recruiting.
With such a small representation in the industry, being a woman in the field of construction isn’t without its challenges. For many women, exuding confidence in their knowledge and abilities is key to success in the trade. Monica Martinez, Senior Customer Support Manager, shares that over the years she has built her confidence in working with men who initially preferred to interact only with other men when it came to concrete. “Overcoming these obstacles has been an important part of my growth,” Monica says.
Lori shares that breaking through barriers in a male-dominated industry required persistence, and a willingness to learn through ups and downs. “My biggest support has been my husband and business partner, along with the network of employees, contractors, and Sundekers,” Lori says.
Unique insights and experience that women bring to SUNDEK allow us to approach challenges from all angles, creating a more comprehensive and forward-thinking company. Here, we celebrate some of the women of SUNDEK: their contributions, their journeys, and the ways they make SUNDEK truly exceptional.
