For many property owners, including a spot for people to cool off is a high priority, but adding a pool just isn’t an option, whether due to financial reasons, safety concerns, or limited space. Fortunately, splash pads are a wonderful alternative. “We’re seeing more and more locations building splash pads instead of pools,” shares Don Snider, President of SUNDEK.
Contact a SUNDEK Contractor Near YouAside from providing a place for people of all ages to safely cool off, there are some major benefits to installing a splash pad:
In some cases, property owners have even opted to replace their pools with splash pads. To accomplish this, the pool is emptied, backfilled, and concrete is laid on top of the former pool. A coatings contractor such as SUNDEK can then install the splash pad coating on the surface.
Note: Consult your legal team with questions about what you need to ensure safety for your residents/guests and verify that you and/or your company have the proper insurance and supervision required for a splash pad.
A splash pad can be installed on a concrete pad that’s basically anywhere on a property, and there’s no minimum size. SUNDEK has installed them in apartment complexes, community parks, gyms, hotels, malls, recreation centers at cities and municipalities, theme parks, waterparks, and more!
When you work with a contractor who installs custom decorative concrete, you can create basically any design. At SUNDEK, we enjoy working with our clients to help make their ideas happen.

Texas State Aquarium wanted to upgrade their existing splash pad, and they knew they wanted something bigger. Additionally, they wanted a vibrant surface that would also be durable and able to withstand the many guests the aquarium sees each year. SUNDEK Commercial Contracting worked with Kraftsman Commercial Playgrounds and Splash Pads to create six custom colors for this 6,500 square-foot splash pad so it would coordinate with the features and building exterior.

Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about splash pads.
The cost of a splash pad depends on several factors, including its size, water features, custom designs, and site preparation requirements. Smaller splash pads with simple spray features may cost significantly less than large commercial installations with interactive elements and custom decorative concrete finishes. Maintenance and operational costs are often lower than those associated with traditional swimming pools.
Some splash pads are designed with water recirculation systems that filter and reuse water, while others use a flow-through system in which water drains away after use. The best option depends on local regulations, budget, maintenance preferences, and the intended use of the splash pad. A contractor can help determine which system is most appropriate for your project.
Splash pads are often considered a safer alternative to swimming pools for young children because they do not typically contain standing water. However, adult supervision is still important, especially for toddlers. Choosing slip-resistant coatings and maintaining clean surfaces can also help improve safety.
Installation timelines vary depending on the size and complexity of the project, as well as site conditions and weather. Smaller splash pads may be completed in a matter of weeks, while larger custom projects can take longer due to plumbing, drainage, decorative finishes, and feature installation.
Concrete is one of the most common and reliable surfaces for splash pads because it is durable, customizable, and compatible with decorative coatings. Many property owners choose textured, slip-resistant coatings to improve traction and create colorful, visually appealing designs. Proper drainage and professional installation are also essential for long-term performance and safety.
