Celebrating Earth Day: SUNDEK’s Sustainable Concrete Solutions

Learn how SUNDEK’s resurfacing process is more environmentally friendly than concrete demolition.

While Earth Day is officially celebrated on April 22, at SUNDEK we’re doing our part to honor the earth year-round. Our organization is proud to be a member of the U.S. Green Building Council.

When clients reach out to us looking to redo their concrete surfaces, we’re thrilled that in addition to creating a beautiful surface, we do it in a way that’s not hard on the earth. Here are a few reasons why resurfacing is a more sustainable practice than tearing out and replacing concrete:

  • Minimized Waste: With resurfacing, SUNDEK prepares existing concrete surfaces and then applies coatings directly on top of them. Resurfacing eliminates the need for concrete demolition, which reduces the amount of waste that goes to the landfill.
  • Resource Conservation: Because resurfacing removes the need for removing and replacing existing concrete, we conserve raw materials such as cement, sand, and gravel, which are all required for new concrete pours.
  • Lower Carbon Footprint: Preserving existing concrete means that SUNDEK reduces emissions that are associated with manufacturing, transporting, and installing new concrete.
  • Extended Lifespan: Resurfacing gives a concrete slab new life, reducing the frequency of replacement cycles.
  • Energy Efficiency: Resurfacing requires less energy than demolishing old concrete and pouring new slabs.

The act of resurfacing contributes to a more sustainable construction process, but the coloring products we manufacture also add to the level of sustainability. Most of our colors are LEED certified because of their excellent Solar Reflective Index (SRI) score. The better the score, the more heat is reflected off the surface rather than being absorbed into the surface, reducing “heat island effect.”

Using our resurfacing technique, we are proud to have resolved surface issues all around the country—sparing the local landfills from tons of concrete debris. Here are just a few projects that display how this sustainable decorative concrete process is a win-win.

Crack Repair & Resurfacing at an Apartment Complex in Colorado

Even though concrete surfaces were experiencing cracks at The Summit at Red Rocks apartment complex in Golden, CO, SUNDEK spared the owners from having to rip out the concrete and replace it. Instead, SUNDEK repaired the cracks and applied a coating of Classic Texture, reviving the space without needing to put demoed concrete in the landfill.

Resolving Water Damaged Balconies at a Marriott Hotel in Kentucky

When a property management consulting group began inspecting their new property—the Lexington Marriott at Griffin Gate in Lexington, Kentucky—they were concerned that a major demolition was in their future. Over 109 balconies on the property were experiencing serious water damage, causing the surfaces to fail. Fortunately, after inspecting the surfaces, SUNDEK was able to come up with a solution that didn’t require demolition. Instead, they removed all failing materials and used a decorative waterproof coating to resurface the balcony floors.

Fixing a Slippery and Outdated Pool Deck at a Hotel in Massachusetts

At the Residence Inn located in Dedham, Massachusetts, property owners were looking to give their indoor pool area an upgrade. Their existing surface, which was a coating that had been placed over tile, was failing. Additionally, the surface was beginning to get slippery. Wanting to create a safer and more aesthetically pleasing space for their guests, the owners hired SUNDEK to remove the existing coating and apply a new coating—Classic Texture.

Upgrading Steps and Patio Area at a Vineyard in Texas

At Singing Water Vineyards in Comfort, Texas, the new owners knew they wanted to refresh all the surfaces at the property. In addition to making them more functional, they also wanted them to reflect the beauty of the surrounding environment. SUNDEK of San Antonio transformed the concrete surfaces, updating them to beautiful hangout spots that complement the nearby rugged hillsides of limestone and granite.
