For decorative concrete contractors, few things are more rewarding than a satisfied client returning with new projects in mind. Concrete Coatings Repair and Restoration (CCRR) had previously resurfaced a homeowner’s Kennewick, Washington backyard—a beautiful pool house floor, a comfortable pool deck, and an inviting patio—and the results exceeded the clients’ expectations. Pleased with the backyard transformation, the homeowners were ready to continue the property upgrades and asked CCRR’s owner Ashton Payne to talk with them about their driveway.
While their 1,100-square-foot driveway had been on their improvement list for quite a while, the homeowners didn’t know exactly what they wanted when it came to the design. However, they did know one thing for sure: they didn’t want anything cookie-cutter. “Everything we’ve done for them has been different,” says Ashton. CCRR was excited to take on the challenge.
After some initial conversations, the homeowners—who knew they wanted something unique, bold, and artistic—decided on a diamond pattern. Originally, the homeowners envisioned the design with three to four diamonds laid out horizontally across the driveway, but as conversations progressed, the design evolved. After several revisions, they knew what they wanted: One large diamond in the center of the driveway, with smaller diamonds nested inside.

CCRR’s crews worked closely with the homeowners to finalize the measurements for the design. The diamond design measures 15 feet wide by 12 feet tall—large enough to command attention but perfectly proportioned to the space. The smaller nested diamonds add depth and dimension, creating a dynamic visual that draws the eye.
Once they had everything down on paper, they needed to make sure it translated to the actual driveway in a way that made the homeowners happy. CCRR mocked up the pattern on the driveway using string lines. “When people want something out of the ordinary, I dig it,” Ashton says. “My crews dig it, too.” But he’s quick to acknowledge that unique designs come with their own set of challenges. “The driveway isn’t symmetrical, so creating a geometric diamond on the surface was pretty challenging,” says Ashton.
After mapping everything out with string, CCRR gave the homeowners a chance to walk around and visualize the placement. After several adjustments, the homeowners gave their final approval for the next phase.
Before any of the decorative work could begin, the driveway needed serious preparation. First, the old, failing coating needed to be removed. Beneath that, the substrate had extensive spalling—a condition where the concrete flakes or crumbles. CCRR completely removed the coating, repaired the surface, then cleaned the surface so the new coating would adhere to it.
For the coating material, CCRR used SUNDEK’s Classic Texture. This product, sometimes known as knockdown texture, is known in the industry for being a reliable coating that checks all the boxes: durable, easy to maintain, and beautiful. This coating can be customized to meet the style needs of any project. In this case, the homeowners opted for a dark and light color for the pattern—Cumberland and Smoke Gray.
With the right product and skilled craftsmanship, CCRR was able to transform this outdated and damaged driveway into a bold, beautiful entrance that will welcome the homeowners and their visitors for years to come.
