Project: Front entrance to the historic Union Station Hotel
In the spring of 2013, we were contacted by the manager of the Union Station Hotel in downtown Nashville. He wanted to know if we could apply a Sundek coating on the approximate 3,000 foot entranceway of the hotel that would simulate the limestone construction on this 113-year-old building. We felt like we could satisfy his wishes. After several meetings with the management and owner of the property where we showed several samples, we were granted the project.
The biggest consideration when bidding this project was how we would accomplish this with the front entrance being open to the public. There was one other entrance, but they wanted to keep the main entrance open as much as possible. This hotel is strategically located in downtown Nashville, a block from the Bridgestone Arena and a short distance to the heart ofNashville’s music and entertainment center. It is almost always one hundred percent occupied. The hotel is often leased out for events, such as weddings, parties, etc. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977. It is one ofNashville’s premier properties. No matter what the difficulties we may face in undertaking this project, it had to be right!
We could not accomplish this project by doing it all at once. We divided it into two sections, prepping and laying the material on one-half and then prepping and laying material on the second half By doing this, we could keep one of the two doors at the front entrance open most of the time. Because we were custom coloring the whole entrance we saved that for the very last so as not to have a shade difference between the two sections. In all, the project took almost four weeks to complete because of weather and delays due to major events that were occurring while we were working. We worked extremely close with the management and maintenance engineer in order to not inconvenience the customers.
The managers and owners were very pleased with the outcome and we subsequently have received many calls about additional jobs from designers and architects who either want to duplicate the limestone effect or other decorative effects.
