Service Project – Decorative Concrete Resurfacing for Army Sergeant Legrand Strickland

Posted in Award Winners

We were given the opportunity, once again, to help a veteran through the Gary Sinise Foundation.

This organization builds state of the art smart homes for injured veterans and first responders. DCR was selected to install SunOne on their garage floor. SunOne was the ideal product to install because of how easy it is to keep the floor clean, the natural slip resistance for safety and the overall beautiful custom floor finish.

The impressive smart home was constructed for Army Sergeant Legrand Strickland (Ret.). Returning from a mission in Zabul, Afghanistan, SGT. Strickland witnessed an improvised explosive device (IED) strike his commander’s vehicle ahead of him. His commander survived the blast and joined Legrand in his vehicle. As they drove away, Legrand’s last memory was being struck by another large explosive. SGT. Strickland survived, but unfortunately his commander did not. In critical condition, Legrand was flown to Germany and then to FT. Sam Houston Brooke Army Medical Center. He sustained many injuries including bilateral above the knee amputations and traumatic brain injury.

Legrand and his wife Carrie have been married since 1999. Carrie and their sons, Noah and Nathan, have been the most instrumental people in SGT. Strickland’s recovery. A specially adapted smart home, that now includes SunOne, will further enable Legrand and Carrie to overcome those challenges together.
