Concrete Coatings, Inc.

Project Name:Armed Services Retirement Center
Project Address:  1800 Beach Drive, Gulfport, MS 39507

Concrete Coatings, in conjunction with Sundek National Accounts, joined forces in an effort to beautify the newly built Armed Forces Retirement Center in Gulfport, MS. The center, erected to house the retired and disabled veterans who have fought to protect our freedom across the world, has over 19,000 square feet of terraces, courtyards, and a pool deck to beautify. Six men and twenty-two days of maximum effort produced a splendid result.
The project was broken down into five areas throughout the property. The front terrace, which consists of two wings and 9,000 sq. feet, is a random tile design with Smoke Gray grout accompanied by Oyster White, Pewter Gray, and Cumberland tiles. The second and third floor courtyards, which encompass 1,800 and 2,400 sq. feet respectively, are monochromatic random tile designs in Oyster White and finally, the pool deck, which is 6,000 sq. feet of Oyster White.
After jumping through all of the OSHA hoops and the terraces scarified, prepped, and cleaned, the real work could begin. The layout for this project was the most labor intensive endeavor we have ever tackled. Armando, Alonso, Florencio, Effrain, Manuel, and Will put down over 100,000 linear feet of 3/8 fibered tape, only to turn around and cut thousands of feet out to get the desired pattern. Keeping track of which lines to cut or keep constant was brain overload. After the design was complete, texture, prep, and spraying began with the three colors. The end result made all the long days well worth the effort invested in the project. After 14 days on the terraces, the other areas proved to be a much easier task. We again donned our yellow vest, hard hats, and safety glasses and proceeded to knock out the other three areas in an eight day span. On the second and third floor courtyards we installed the same pattern as before, with the exception of the color changes. By the time we got to the pool deck, Classic Texture sounded so good knowing we could do that in our sleep. Twenty-two days of moving material, general contractor’s, sub-contractors, stairs, out of service elevators, parking issues, 12-14 hr. days, hotels, and safety inspectors can wear a crew down. Yet at the end of the day, it was all worth it as SUNDEK will be enjoyed by those who have fought for our country and our lives. That is truly rewarding.
